FORT ST. JOHN -- The City of Fort St. John has announced the acquisition of a new property that will serve as an Emergency Services building.

The former Wolverine Motors facility on 100 Avenue will see its 10,000 square-feet of building space converted to help bolster community response capabilities.

"This acquisition not only provides an immediate solution to our pressing need for additional emergency services infrastructure but also demonstrates our dedication to optimizing resources for the benefit of our community," said Mayor Lilia Hansen.

The city says it negotiated the final purchase price of $1.87 million to align with its commitment of ‘delivering value’ to taxpayers.

In the city’s 2024 budget, $3 million was allocated toward the design and construction of a similar facility.

A portion of the building will be leased to the North Peace Search and Rescue Team, but an agreement is yet to be finalized.

"North Peace Search and Rescue is indispensable in our region, serving as a critical lifeline for outdoor enthusiasts and workers,” said the city in a media release.

The city says the Fort St. John Fire Department will utilize the remaining space.

“The acquisition of the emergency services building is not just a strategic move but a tangible step towards ensuring the safety and well-being of our community,” said the city.
