FORT ST. JOHN -- 21 year old Eric Coulam who planned to receive Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) due to his chronic medical condition has passed away.

Last year, Coulam spoke with CJDC-TV news after he made his decision to pursue MAID.

The 21 year-old had been suffering for several years with an unknown gastrointestinal condition that doctors couldn’t diagnose.

He was sent to a number of hospitals for treatment including ones in Grande Prairie, Edmonton, Vancouver and Kelowna.

He eventually had his lower intestine removed and continued to suffer chronic pain.

Speaking with CJDC-TV last year, Eric said “there’ll be an end to suffering. I suffer all day long. I’ve been in a four walled room for a very long time and I’ve just had enough”.

Eric’s father Wade announced his passing on social media.

He said “With sadness in our hearts we announce that Eric passed peacefully on August 17 shortly after 5pm. Eric was surrounded by his father Wade, his 2 cousins Taylor and Josh and his Grampa Ivan in his final hours.”
