FORT ST. JOHN -- The ESS Reception Centre at the North Peace Arena in Fort St. John is closed due to the rescinding of all evacuation orders across the Peace Region.

“So with the evacuation orders being rescinded throughout the Peace River Regional District, there's no longer a requirement for emergency support services,” says Ryan Harvey, the city’s communication manager.

The centre’s last day was yesterday and closed at 3 p.m.

The city says they will continue to provide support services until Friday for those who were already registered with emergency services. The city will provide support on a case-by-case basis for those under extenuating circumstances who require special assistance.

The centre provided resources and helped organize accommodations for nearly a thousand evacuees from the wildfires.

“We just want to thank the volunteers and staff as well as all of the suppliers who have worked tirelessly over the last couple of weeks to help support our neighbours. That's what we do as a community, and so it's greatly appreciated. And, hopefully, we can have a bit quieter of summer on that front but if something changes, of course, we'll be there to support our neighbours once again,” says Harvey.

The City of Fort St. John says residents can go to the city’s website for more information on the closure as well as future volunteering and training opportunities.
