FORT NELSON -- Despite recent snowfall, drought conditions have led to an increase in calls for unattended campfires in Fort Nelson, causing extensive damage.
The municipality says firefighters with Northern Rockies Fire Rescue have responded to six calls in the past month related to campfires.
The fires are burning deep into tree roots amid record drought, requiring hundreds of firefighting hours and thousands of gallons of water to extinguish.
To keep the community safe, the municipality is urging residents and visitors to exercise caution and to follow campfire safety tips.
These include adhering to guidelines for fire size and ensuring the fire is completely extinguished before leaving. If water is not available, using snow, dirt, or sand is being advised to smother fires until cooled.
“As we enjoy the winter and hunting season, let’s be responsible and protect our environment during these drought conditions,” said Northern Rockies Regional Municipality in a Facebook post.
Agriculture Canada's latest assessment continues to list drought conditions in the Fort Nelson area as extreme.
