Two local First Nations are getting infrastructure grants from the province.

The Fort Nelson and Saulteau First Nations are both receiving funding from the First Peoples’ Cultural Council. The grants are part of a $5.4 million fund to develop, conserve, and repair First Nations heritage infrastructure in B.C.

Fort Nelson First Nation will receive $324,040 for upgrades to their drum arbor and moose camp. Saulteau First Nation will use their grant of $154,790 for a cemetery upgrade and beautification project.

Fourteen other projects across the province will also receive funding, including the Takla Nation in Prince George and the Tl’azt’en Nation in Fort St. James.

“This funding is vital to ensure Indigenous heritage in B.C. is protected for future generations,” said Karen Aird, FPCC Heritage Program Manager. “This investment enables First Nations communities to lead work to safeguard their cultural spaces and heritage collections, and demonstrates the urgent need for long term, sustainable funding to protect First Nations heritage.”
