ROLLA -- A workplace accident at an oil and gas facility in Rolla sent one person to hospital with serious injuries.

According to WorkSafeBC, a contractor was welding a piece of equipment when sparks come into contact with a small amount of hydrocarbon fluid.

The subsequent flash fire caused an explosion that sent the man to hospital with serious burns ranging from first to third degree.

A welder and helper were working on installing chains when the explosion occurred. After the explosion, it was determined that the building sustained structural damage.

The incident is under investigation and WorkSafeBC said, "further enforcement action may be taken as a result of the findings of the investigation."
