DAWSON CREEK -- The Dawson Creek and District Hospital Emergency Department is on diversion. Northern Health saying services will be unavailable from 7 p.m. Sunday and will reopen Monday at 8 a.m.

Northern Health said the interruption is due to "unexpected shortage of physician coverage." The health authority announcing the closure on social media just before closing the ER on Sunday night.

They are also advising anyone from Dawson Creek who may be needing emergency care to call 9-1-1 for transport to the nearest available and appropriate facility.

The number of hospital diversions across the Peace Region has ballooned this year. The number of diversions continues to increase, despite BC's Health Minister insisting for the past 3.5 years, that his BC Government is working on the chronic staffing shortages that have plagued Northeast BC.
