FORT ST. JOHN -- With the Easter long weekend upon us, drivers are being warned to expect unpredictable road conditions.
ICBC is asking that drivers use extra caution on the roads and be on the lookout for wildlife in areas with posted animal crossing signs as the arrival of spring combined with the Easter holiday means roads will be busier than usual.
“People should plan their trips ahead, avoid driving fatigued and ensure their vehicles are in good shape and have winter tires if travelling through the mountains,” said ICBC in a statement.
The company says the Easter long weekend on B.C. roads sees an average of one fatality and more than 570 people injured in more nearly 2200 crashes each year.
They have also released statistics based on organization and police data collected from 2018 to 2022 calculated from the Thursday prior to Good Friday until midnight on Easter Monday.
- Lower Mainland : On average, 430 people are injured in 1,407 crashes every year over the Easter long weekend.
- Vancouver Island: On average, 67 people are injured in 289 crashes every year over the Easter long weekend.
- Southern Interior: On average, 60 people are injured in 313 crashes every year over the Easter long weekend.
- North Central: On average, 18 people are injured in 124 crashes every year in the region over the Easter long weekend.
Police are also advising motorists to obey the speed limit and plan ahead for a safe ride home should you or your guests be drinking or taking substances that cause impairments.
