DAWSON CREEK -- One person has been airlifted to hospital after an accident in Dawson Creek on Sunday night.

Police were called to the scene on the Dangerous Goods Road shortly after 8:30pm.

According to BC Highway Patrol, a blue Jeep was making a left hand turn onto 13th Street when it was rear-ended by a white Ford Escape.

The Escape continued into on-coming traffic and was then hit by a semi. The driver of the Escape was trapped in the vehicle and had to be extracated by using the ‘jaws of life.’

The driver of the Escape was airlifted to hospital with life threatening injuries.

A service dog was in one of the vehicles at the time of the accident. Staff Sergeant Kris Clark says the dog died from its injuries.

The road was closed in both directions while police investigated the accident. It has since been re-opened.
