DAWSON CREEK -- The City of Dawson Creek is looking to present a united front to its provincial counterparts.

Mayor Darcy Dober is seeking council's support in sending a letter denouncing racism and anti-Indigenous rhetoric made during the 2024 provincial election.

The letter, penned by the Leaders' Table, is addressed to Premier David Eby and Opposition Leader John Rustad. While specific examples of racism and anti-Indigenous sentiment were not named, the letter seeks support from mayors and First Nations across the region in condemning comments made by candidates running for office.

The letter highlights the commitment of Northeast communities to mutual respect, inclusivity, and reconciliation, adding that comments made create harm and division.

“It is our steadfast belief that such statements have no place in our province and that they must be met with firm and immediate opposition from leaders at every level,” reads the letter, urging Eby and Rustad to take every opportunity to denounce racism and intolerance.

“Our communities are watching, and our citizens expect nothing less than strong, unwavering leadership on this critical matter.”

The letter will be presented during a regular council meeting on November 18th.
