CHETWYND -- Students at Little Prairie Elementary school in Chetwynd were kept inside today after reports that a cougar was spotted around the area.

The school located 451 St Avenue NE contacted the RCMP and the Conservation Officer this morning, who are currently investigating the sighting.

A notice was sent to parents cautioning that children who normally walk home after school to be picked up should the cougar still be lurking in the vicinity.

In a statement, the B.C. Conservation Officer Service said they "Received unconfirmed reports of a cougar in the area. No cougar has been sighted, but conservation officers will monitor the area."

The BC SPCA says that in the event you encounter a cougar, it is important to remain calm, make yourself look bigger, maintain eye contact, and make loud noises until the cougar leaves.
