DAWSON CREEK -- Dawson Creek residents may have noticed something missing from near the traffic circle this week. The City of Dawson Creek is replacing the Alaska Highway sign over the next few months.

According to the city, the attraction is due for a clean-up. The original sign was made of plywood and wasn’t able to withstand as much wear and tear explains city officials. So, they'll be making a new sign made out of a hardier material while maintaining all of the historical integrity and original look.

The cairn itself, the “pile of stones” below our Alaska Highway sign, will stay in place.

There are also plans for other tourist features like lights and more signs.

The city says the sign will be back up by May.
