DAWSON CREEK -- Former British Columbia premier John Horgan loomed large over the swearing-in ceremony Wednesday for 47 New Democrat members of the legislature, a day after his death.

"I feel like he's here with us," said Premier David Eby, adding that Horgan would likely be laughing and cheering the loudest.

The City of Dawson Creek have lowered flags in front of city hall to half mast in honour of the former premier.

Fort St. John city councillor and former BC Conservative Leader, Trevor Bolin taking to social media to express his condolences.

Bolin tweeted, “My thoughts are with @jjhorgan’s family today. John was a stand up guy, and created an amazing legacy for his family to be proud of. We didn’t always agree on policy, but I respected him greatly.”

Both former MLA’s for the Peace Region also sending their condolences. Mike Bernier and Dan Davies both sharing on X’s about the respect they both had for Horgan.

Horgan’s family said he passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria with his family by his side.

They are asking for privacy while they mourn, while adding. “Live Long and Prosper,” referencing Horgan’s love of Star Trek.
