DAWSON CREEK -- The City of Dawson Creek is preparing for the upcoming wildfire season, and is reminding residents of the number of ways they can stay informed and get involved.

The city has declared May 5th to the 11th as Emergency Preparedness Week.

Residents are being encouraged to register for Northeast BC Alerts, subscribe to the City Emergency Newsfeed, and to volunteer for Emergency Support Services.

The Northeast BC Alert is a system that allows vulnerable populations who may not have access to social media to register for email, phone, and text alerts in cases where an emergency alert is issued.

Local businesses and non-profits are also being encouraged to register to be able to quickly relay emergency information to clients.

“One simple notification may be all it takes to ensure that your family is aware of an emergency situation and can get to safety,” said the city in a press release.

The City Emergency Newsfeed is a platform that allows residents to receive information posted by the City Emergency Team in the event an incident triggers the Emergency Operations Centre being activated.

Residents are being asked to subscribe to updates by visiting subscribe.dawsoncreek.ca/Subscribe.

Dawson Creek is also placing out a call for Emergency Support Service volunteers.

“In 2023, the City’s Emergency Support Services team supported over 2500 evacuees with lodging, food, clothing, and animal services,” said the city.

They will be hosting a volunteer recruiting event Tuesday, May 14th at Beans and Barley located at 1444 102 Avenue in Dawson Creek. Anyone who is interested is asked to attend in person from 7:00-8:00 p.m. of fill out a Volunteer Registration Form.

“This year during Emergency Preparedness Week let’s take a proactive approach and set the community up for success during the emergency season,” said the city.
