DAWSON CREEK -- Communities across British Columbia who are fed up with an increase in crime, have organized protests to demand safer streets.

Public safety rallies were held in several B.C. cities including, Dawson Creek, Surrey, Nanaimo and Victoria.

A growing number of grassroots and volunteer groups are calling on their city councils, the province and the federal government to address the root causes of crime.

The Dawson Creek Citizens Take Action Group organized a rally at the N.A.R. Park on Thursday.

One of the organizers, Dwaine Dilworth said, "it's unsafe for our children, our ladies, all the public to go to bank machines, into parks and the fear of stepping on needles and just zero repercussions to the repeat offenders."

Organizers are urging the City of Dawson Creek, the province and the Trudeau government to take action on repeat offenders and increase mental health supports. They are also calling for Ottawa to repeal the decriminalization of hard drugs.
