DAWSON CREEK -- Today is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, it also marks the beginning of 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence, a global call to action to create a world free of violence against women.

Premier David Eby sharing in a statement today, “Our government is committed to ending gender-based violence. We know there is more work to do.”

In the Peace Region, the South Peace Community Resource Society offers victim services and counselling in Dawson Creek, Chetwynd and Tumbler Ridge. Chetwynd and Tumbler Ridge also offer safe houses for those who are in danger of staying with abusive partners. In Dawson Creek, they offer Community Based Victim Services.

There are renewed calls to declare intimate partner violence in Canada an epidemic; something six provinces have already done.

A new report from the United Nations says 140 women and girls on average were killed every day last year by a family member or intimate partner.
