FORT ST. JOHN -- The Beatton Airport Road has closed due to a washout from heavy rainfall. This is after Fort St. John received 70 millimeters of rain over the May long weekend.

Dawson Creek had close to 50 millimetres.

Environment Canada issued a rainfall and flood watch warning for the Peace Region on Sunday. They said, there’s a threat of flooding and debris flow in the area.

Dawson Creek experienced similar weather in the summer of 2016, causing a major flood.

However, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, Bobby Sekhon said “they’re kind of similar in the weather patterns we saw an upper low move into Alberta and give that wraparound moisture, that easterly flow. However, in this case, the position of the low was slightly different and that it did not stall over that region for as long. So it made for less heavy rainfall.”

Sekhon said the lighter rain from the past few days is less likely to cause flooding like in 2016.

Showers are expected to decrease in intensity today and clear up on Thursday.
