FORT ST. JOHN -- The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) has announced a slowdown in wildfire activity across the province.

With 85% of wildfires now classified as ‘held’ or ‘under control,’ the focus is shifting towards strategies to mitigate damage during future wildfire seasons.

According to the BCWS, current conditions are ideal for initiating cultural and prescribed burns, which are expected to commence in the coming weeks throughout British Columbia. The controlled burns aim to reduce forest fuels and prevent more severe wildfires in the future.

In addition to preparing for prescribed burns, BCWS says crews are concentrating on a ‘mop up and patrol’ strategy. This involves firefighters inspecting and extinguishing existing hot spots, removing equipment, and preparing burnt areas for recovery.

According to the service's latest update, there are 78 wildfires still burning in the Prince George Fire Centre, with only 23 of those classified as ‘out of control.’

The BC Wildfire Service adds that they remain vigilant and committed to ensuring the safety and recovery of affected areas.
