FORT ST. JOHN -- BC Transit is making it easier to get around Fort St. John and Dawson Creek.

The transit commission has announced it will be upgrading its fleet across the Peace Region to support a new payment option.

The 'Umo' electronic fare system will allow riders to pay bus fares via an app or reloadable card.

The reloadable cards can be picked up for free at any BC Transit vendor.

An onboard validator will be set up next to the driver, allowing riders the option to tap their card or scan a QR code generated within the free Umo app.

Transit users will know their fare was accepted when a check mark pops up on the validator and a sound signal is played.

Riders can reload their card with cash or passes online, through the app, and at participating vendor kiosks.

BC Transit says Umo will be rolled out in Dawson Creek and Fort St. John in the next few weeks.

Having launched last year, Umo is already available in major transit hubs across the province.

The commission plans to implement its use across remaining transit systems throughout the course of the year to provide more convenience, but cash will continue to be accepted.

BC Transit says they plan to enable onboard payments with debit and credit cards across the province at a later date.
