DAWSON CREEK -- The province of B.C. continues to move forward with vaccinations as the second round of doses are starting to be administered today.

The decision to start with second doses comes after B.C. hit the 62 per cent mark of people who have been vaccinated.

Dr. Bonnie Henry also announced the time between getting the first and second dose has been cut in half.

Originally, people would wait up to 16 weeks before being booked for the second shot; now they will only be waiting for 8 weeks.

Changing the time frame is mainly due to the increased amount supply of vaccines in the province.

Similar to the first vaccine rollout, anyone who is age 70 and up or who is clinically vulnerable is able to register starting today.

Some long-term care facilities have already received second doses and all of them are expected to be done within the next few weeks.

Dr. Bonnie Henry stated today everyone should be able to get their second shot by the end of summer.

"Our vaccines are safe and effective. They are saving lives and this needs to be celebrated by all of us," said Henry.

The provincial government also said the National Advisory Committee has confirmed it is safe to mix Moderna and Pfizer for a second dose.

However, there is still not enough information concerning AstraZeneca yet as to whether or not it can be as effective while mixed with the other two RNA vaccines.

Anyone who was vaccinated before April 15, 2021 will need to re-register through the new system in order to make it easier to book and receive their second dose.
