CHETWYND -- Warm and sunny weather has officials with Avalanche Canada worried this weekend.

The avalanche danger rating for the Peace Region has been increased from considerable to high.

Backcountry enthusiasts are being warned to avoid all avalanche terrain from the alpine areas to below the treeline.

Cornice failure, along with brief periods of sunshine may trigger large avalanches.

As the temperatures increase over the next 3 days, conditions are expected to worsen.

Officials hope the message is loud and clear as spring break begins, drawing many families outside to enjoy the warm weather.

So far this year, 5 people have died in avalanches in or near British Columbia, including a snowmobiler near Chetwynd.
