SunFM & Fort St. John Hospital Foundation Get Together for Valentine's Day

Travis Fortnum

This Thursday is Valentine’s Day, and Sun FM will be teaming up with the Fort St. John Hospital Foundation for the 17th annual ‘Have a Heart Radio-thon’.

The Top 40 station will be broadcasting live from Safeway in Fort St. John starting at 7:00 A.M. and going all the way through 6:00 P.M., raising money for the hospital’s Pediatric Department along the way.

In the past - Funds raised from the radio-thon have helped the hospital purchase important medical equipment, like panda warmers and vein viewers.

This year’s goal is set at $45,000, with hopes to buy some new syringe pumps for use in the Birthing Centre.

What does a syringe pump do?

“Sometimes children have to have not just one fluid or medication or dosage," explains Niki Hedges, Executive Director of the Fort St. John Hospital Foundation.

"It could be several at one time and that’s why the pumps are so important.”

Each year, more than 600 babies are born in the Fort St. John Hospital, making the Birthing Centre one of the busiest in the country.

“We have a large pull for the area," Hedges says.

"So our facility serves a really big region and we need to make sure that when patients come here that we have the best technology in order to be able to take care of patients.

"Children have very specific needs so we want to make sure that we have the equipment in order to be able to help with their best care and treatment.”
