Fort St. John to host Frostival at Mathews Park Tomorrow

There’s good news if you were planning to take in Fort St. John’s annual “Frostival” tomorrow at the Mathews Park skating loop.

Despite fears of a possible postponement because of warmer temperatures, city crews say the weather is now cooperating - and the event is a go!

This is the third winter the city has constructed an ice skating loop in the park and the second year it's played host to the aptly named “Frostival".

With temperatures closer to zero and a bit of a melt earlier this week, there was concern over whether the skating loop would be fit to host the party for skaters.

"People were a little concerned that it might get too warm,” says David Green, Recreation Programmer with the city of Fort St. John.

“But our grounds crew did a great job of making sure that went through so it's a go and the ice is going to be good. It's going to be a fun event on Saturday."

The event is extremely weather-dependent. Last year’s was postponed because temperatures were too cold.

"It was too cold and now this year it was too warm,” says Green. “but now it's good, so there's going to be skate rentals from Hard Edge Sports, SaveOn is coming to give out free water so that's pretty awesome.

“We're also going to be handing out s'mores and hot chocolate for free and there's going to be prizes to be won so it's going to be a fun event!"

The skating loop is open dawn until dusk every day, and tomorrow's "Frostival" runs from 3 until 6 p.m..
