The dates for the Crystal Cup Pond Hockey Challenge have been announced!

Organizer Neil Evans says the tournament will return for its eighth year over the last weekend of February.

"We are gonna be out on Charlie Lake February 22nd to the 24th of 2019," Evans said, "and it's also our second annual Sid Davis Memorial Youth Pond Hockey Challenge. That's an event we added on to the Crystal Cup just last year that brought out an overwhelming- 50 teams on top of our 32 teams, to have 82 teams out there on the lake."

Evans says this year's tournament could host over 100 teams, which would make it the second largest pond hockey challenge in Canada.

In the past, the Crystal Cup was given out on the same weekend as the city-hosted High on Ice Festival. After changing weekends last year, Evans says that once again the two events will not be held on conflicting dates.

"We are going to be doing our own weekend again this weekend - february 22nd to the 24th, so i think it's the weekend before is the city event," said Evans. "There's no bad blood or anything, a lot of people think we have bad blood with the city, and we just try to avoid them, but it just works out better for our committee, and that way we get to enjoy Family Day Weekend as well, and then host our event the following weekend."

Evans says the Crystal Cup website should be up to date by the end of the week, with information for anyone hoping to register.
