3rd annual Jr. Canucks' Hockey School a success

Today (Friday) was the final day of the 3rd annual 'Dawson Creek Jr. Canucks' Hockey School.'
Every day this week, girls and boys, ages six to 14, took to the ice at the Dawson Creek Memorial Arena to better their game.
Head Instructor at the hockey school, Mark Readman, says the camp allows local kids to prepare for their fall seasons, while learning new skills and enjoying Canada's sport.
"We want to see that progression, even if it's something small," adds Readman. "We have a few goalies in here who are 7-years-old and have never really put in a long-time of work, but even seeing small progressions in their game from Monday to now, it seems small, but really at that age, it's kinda astronomical. Anything small we can help imply to help improve their game is kind of our end goal. We provide them with a wide-variety of things over the course of the week, so if one thing sticks, then that's what we hope."
Readman says it's a well-structured week, with a powerskating session to jump-start the morning, followed by dry-land training, lunch, a video session, an on-ice skills practice, and lastly, an off-ice hockey-specific skills session.
"I think the more opportunities we can provide for kids to have fun within our community allows them to enjoy the sport more, allows them to stick around longer and helps grow the game within our community, especially when we're a community that gets eight or nine months of winter a year, then you're going to need to find something to do in those cold months," adds Readman. "Even though we're getting ourselves better, we're having fun doing it at the same time. And that's really the whole point of hockey, right? It's about coming together with a couple of your best friends, having a fun time for a week."
Over 90 players from the surrounding area - including Dawson Creek, Chetwynd, Tumbler Ridge, and Williams Lake - participated in the camp - and it was a success.
To top it off, the school's numbers just keep growing year after year.
