Sewer Adventure
October 7, 2008 - 4:36am.
Three young men wandering underground in the sewers below Fort St Johnwere rescued and brought to safety last night by police and fire
personnel.
At about 9 pm Monday night, police and fire fighters were called to
100th St and 93rd Ave with a report of an open manhole. Two rescue
teams went below ground and found three men in the oxygen-deprived
atmosphere. They seemed to have walked several blocks underground "for
a lark", according to Fire Chief Fred Burrows.
Burrows says they found the three men about 75 metres north of 100th
street in the sewers. He says the men appear to be around 18-20 years
old.
The men were pulled out just before 10 pm and taken to hospital by
ambulance. About 10 fire fighters stayed on the scene, searching for a
fourth person rumoured to be underground. When they found no one,
wrapped up the rescue operation around 10:30 pm.
RCMP haven't stated if any charges will be laid.
