Fire Prevention week off to a blazing start
Hundreds of people turned out for the Fire Department's annual barbeque Saturday and for the opening of Fire Prevention week.
The fire safety house simulated a smoke-filled two-storey building, firefighters in gear were everywhere putting out fires, and fire trucks polished to a shine filled the Canadian Tire parking lot for Day one of Fire Prevention week.
Local fire departments are hoping that by the end of this week, the public will better know how to protect themselves and prevent home fires - the theme of this year's fire Prevention Week.
Captain Gregg Nichols says the fire safety house is a good way to teach kids how to get out of a burning house... but he adds that nothing compares to families having an escape plan and practicing it.
Fire Prevention week runs October 4-11. Fire fighters will be going to every school in the community over the next two weeks teaching kids about fire safety.
