Around 8:30 on Saturday night, a Fort St. John Resident was warming up their vehicle in the parking lot of the Totem Mall.

They left the keys inside their white, 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier with the doors unlocked.

When the owner came back, expecting their car to be nice and warm – it was actually gone.

Fort St. John RCMP responded, and are now cautioning residents to take all measures to secure your vehicle.

“Locking your vehicle, whether it is running or not” says Cst. Chad Neustaeter, “is always a deterrent for thieves who are looking for easy targets, such as the vehicle itself or items inside.”

In fact, drivers can be fined for leaving a vehicle unlocked.

Under the BC Motor Vehicle Act for Unsecured Motor Vehicles, the penalty is $81.

The vehicle taken on the weekend is described as:

  • White
  • 4 doors
  • 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier

It looks similar to the image above.

The Fort St John RCMP continue to investigate and ask anyone with information to call them at 250-787-8100.
