BC SPCA gives special award to City of Dawson Creek

The City of Dawson Creek has received a special award from the BC SPCA.

The city won the ‘Humane Community Award’ from the province-wide organization.

The award was presented in recognition of the city’s approach to animal welfare.

The city introduced an animal responsibility bylaw designed to address the cat overpopulation crisis by encouraging cat owners to spay and neuter their pets and also get permanent identification for them.

The SCPA has provided free spay and neuter surgeries to the city’s residents, thanks to a grant from PetSmart Charities of Canada.

73 per cent of kittens that were brought into the South Peace branch in 2015 came from Dawson Creek. This number decreased to 31 per cent just last year.
