North Peace Mental Health Society to host first ever Mental Health Walk
The North Peace Mental Health Society is hosting its first ever Mental Health Walk tomorrow.
The walk is set to take place at the Pomeroy Sport Centre’s and is being organized in partnership with the Fort St. John Mental Health and Addictions Advisory Committee. The walk is part of Mental Health Awareness Week and is an attempt to fill a void in the community.
“There’s no fundraisers, or walks, or bike rides, or golf tournaments, or anything like that to bring awareness to mental health, and it seems to be a big issue," said Cindy Goertzen, director of the committee. "It’s good that people are talking more about it, so I thought ‘well let’s walk for mental health.’”
The Mental Health Society will also be accepting donations for their client support and wellness programs. But Goertzen says the most important part of the walk is its educational aspect.
“[It's] to reduce the stigma and have people talk about it more and learn about it more. We’re going to have a few brochures explaining about mental illness too.”
The walk starts at 1 p.m and ends at 3. Anyone interested in getting involved with the advisory committee can call Goertzen at 250-789-6780.
