Peace River North MLA Dan Davies named Education Critic
Both of the Peace Region’s MLAs will have high-ranking roles in the opposition when the legislature reconvenes.
First-term Peace River North MLA Dan Davies has been named the Education Critic, alongside veteran Mary Polak, while Peace River South MLA Mike Bernier will serve as Health Critic.
Davies says he wants to continue improving the province’s education system.
“I’m looking forward to continuing some of the great work that the previous government has done, making sure that we hold our place in the world as having one of the best education systems in the world.”
Davies was a teacher for 12 years before running in the provincial election. He says that along with advocating for more schools in the region, he’ll be holding the government to account for the low rate of teacher recruitment in the northeast.
“We’re certainly looking at a shortage in educators here in this province, and certainly in the smaller communities, and Peace River North is no exception to that, so looking at how can we improve the intakes with the AHCOTE [Alaska Highway Consortium on Teacher Education] program for instance? How can we better attract teachers to the north? So those are things that I need to be working on.”
The previous Minister of Education was Peace River South MLA Mike Bernier. Davies says he hasn’t talked to Bernier about the file yet, but he plans to in the near future.
