Three local police officers prepare to bike across BC for charity
Three cops in Fort St John will be biking across BC to raise money in the fight against cancer.
RCMP Constables Rebecca Bojczuk and Tristan Williams, along with BC Sheriff Service Sergeant Amy McGuire are taking part in the Cops for Cancer Tour de North bike ride from Williams Lake to Dawson Creek. The ride kicks off on Tuesday, September 12, arriving in Dawson Creek on Monday, September 18.
McGuire says she decided to take part for personal reasons.
“I decided to get involved because I had a family friend who passed away from cancer just last year," said McGuire. "He was pretty close to our family so I just thought this is something I could do, my part in raising money for the Cops for Cancer.”
All participants are aiming to raise 3 thousand dollars apiece, with all proceeds going towards programs that benefit children.
This is the first long-distance bike ride McGuire will have attempted, and she and her fellow riders are already preparing.
“They’ve been really supportive," McGuire said. "We’ve all been out training and on our bikes and stuff, and then we had Pat Ferris helping us out. So we’ve had a lot of knowledge, and then it’s just about getting out on your bike and practicing.”
The officers are holding a jail and bail at Totem Mall on Friday, September 8. Signup sheets can be found at the RCMP detachment or the courthouse.
