Yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon, Spirit River RCMP responded to two serious motor vehicle collisions. The incidents occurred just one-hour apart.
Just before 4:00 p.m., officers were alerted to a collision on Highway 2 at Township Road 763. Allegedly, a pick-up truck was travelling westbound on Township Road, when it collided with an unloaded semi-truck moving southbound on Highway 2. The 84-year-old driver of the pick-up was airlifted by STARS to a hospital in Edmonton in serious condition. The driver of the semi did not need medical attention.
Shortly before 5:00 p.m., RCMP attended to a two-vehicle collision on Highway 49 and Range Road 110. At the early stages of the investigation, it appears that apparently a semi-tractor trailer unit travelling westbound on Highway 49 was attempting to pass a tractor that was hauling hay. The two vehicles collided when the tractor began to turn left at the intersection of Range Road 110. The 74-year-old male driver of the tractor died on scene. The driver of the semi-truck was uninjured. A collision analyst attended the scene of the crash.
Investigations are ongoing for both collisions.
