The Encana Events Centre will be receiving a new scoreboard, thanks to Dawson Creek City Council.
Council originally had allocated $350,000 in the 2017 Budget for multi-use floor boards in the facility, but after learning more, that addition wasn't possible.
The new scoreboard will be used for sporting events, concerts and various other shows at Encana.
The current score clock is apparently having operational issues and seemed to be freezing up when the city was hosting the Team Canada Women's National Training Camp last September.
"The jumbotron and the scoreboard are original to the building - approximately 10 years of service and life," says General Manager of Spectra Venue Management at the Encana Events Centre, Ryan MacIvor. "So the product that it is, much like any technology, has become outdated, but more importantly is that we can't get any replacement parts for it, due to the age and the change in technology and so, it's met it's life cycle."
There is no set timeline for the project.
MacIvor wants to ensure they're getting a product that is needed, fits within some current infrastructure, and contributes to the long-term approach at the Encana Events Centre.
Mayor for Dawson Creek, Dale Bumstead, says in moving forward with the sport tourism aspect, reliability of technology is important.
"I think honestly the event centre is a facility for us that puts on those world-class international events. It's such a huge opportunity from so many aspects and for me, it's about the development of our event and sport tourism strategy. When you bring in that kind of an event into your community, an economic spend of 2 or 3 or 4 million dollars is important to us, not only for the profile of the event, but the economics of the event. And so that's why this investment to the Encana Events Centre - for us - has to be made, in terms of having that equipment available."
The Mayor says the scoreboard will be "more than just a clock; it'll be a multi-functional, visual piece of technology."
