B.C. Health Minister Adrian Dix was in Dawson Creek today to make a huge announcement. A redevelopment of the Dawson Creek and District Hospital has been approved.

“The provincial government has approved the concept plan for the redevelopment project here in Dawson Creek, the project is a go," Dix said at the announcement. "We are going full steam ahead."

The approval of the concept plan to redevelop and expand Dawson Creek’s hospital is the first step to getting shovels in the ground, which is expected to happen in 2021. The redeveloped hospital will feature more beds and private rooms, a new inpatient building, an expanded emergency department and modern operating rooms with state-of-the-art technology. The project is expected to cost anywhere between $300 and $400 million, the cost will be clear after the business plan for the new hospital has been developed and approved, which could take up to 18 months.

For the community, the announcement has been a long time coming. Northern Health identified the hospital renewal as a priority back in 2008, and in 2015 the organization submitted a concept plan for the hospital, but it did not receive consideration for advancement in the capital planning process. Today’s announcement means major improvements to health care in the South Peace.

“It makes it cleaner, it makes it safer, it makes it more private," said Dix. "It means that the operating room facilities are in the 21st century, not the 20th century. Meaning that you can attract surgeons here and ensure a higher level, a better level of recovery, and we need this right. Like this hospital has served us enormously well but its time had come and the time has come for this redevelopment and now we can have the hospital we need for the next twenty thirty years and for the healthcare that we have today. So it’s exciting here, people have waiting a long, long, long time in Dawson Creek."
